Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation
ESPR makes sustainable product design a legal requirement across almost all physical products placed on the EU market. It shifts the question from whether a product works today to whether it is durable, repairable, recyclable and supported by credible lifecycle data.
Whole vehicles are carved out only for aspects already covered by vehicle type-approval law. Components, materials, tyres, e-bikes, e-scooters and product aspects outside type approval can still fall into ESPR through delegated acts.
The Digital Product Passport is the data backbone. The QR code is the visible part; the difficult work is assembling accurate, machine-readable value-chain data before the product reaches the market.
