EU Sustainability Compliance

CBAM / ETS Compliance

Carbon-pricing and embedded-emissions obligations affecting EU importers and Indian exporters of steel, aluminium and carbon-intensive inputs.

EU 2023/956 and EU 2003/87/EC

Carbon Border Adjustment and EU Emissions Trading

CBAM prevents EU carbon pricing from being undercut by imports from lower-carbon-cost jurisdictions. EU importers must account for embedded emissions in covered goods and, from the full phase, buy CBAM certificates linked to ETS allowance prices.

For Indian automotive suppliers, exposure often sits in steel and aluminium content rather than finished vehicles alone. Stampings, forgings, castings, tubes and aluminium parts can become commercially sensitive when EU customers calculate carbon cost.

The commercial risk is indirect but real: if suppliers cannot provide verified emissions data, EU buyers may rely on conservative default values and push the resulting cost or risk back through contracts.

Who Is Affected

Where This Reaches the Supply Chain

Steel stampings, forgings, machined parts and pressings suppliers

Aluminium casting, die-casting and structural component suppliers

Exporters whose EU customers ask for embedded-emissions data

Finance, procurement, operations and sustainability teams managing carbon clauses

Key Dates

Regulatory Timing to Watch

Oct 2023-Dec 2025

Transitional CBAM reporting phase with quarterly embedded-emissions reporting.

Dec 2025

EU importers need authorised declarant registration before the full phase.

Jan 2026

Financial obligations begin; CBAM certificates must be purchased and surrendered.

2027-2030

ETS 2 starts and CBAM/ETS cost exposure becomes a recurring supplier-readiness issue.
